With about 25,000 residents and 5,700 families, the community of Homewood is close-knit and family-oriented. Homewood is noted for having three districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Roseville Historic District, the Rosedale Park Historic District, and the Hollywood Historic District. Many homes in Hollywood were built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style made popular in the early days of its namesake, Hollywood, California.

The Homewood High School Patriot Marching Band is the pride of the community, participating in many national events including Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades, two presidential inaugural parades, and several Alabama gubernatorial inaugural parades. Homewood is the site of Samford University, named by Forbes magazine as the top-rated university in Alabama in 2015 and listed in U.S. News & World Report as fourth in the state for best regional universities. Located just outside Homewood's northern border is the University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of the nation's top-ranked public universities.
